Abstract

§ The number of poor people (population below the Poverty Line) in South Sumatra Province in September 2015 was 1,112,526 people or 13.77 percent. Compared with the poor population in March 2015, which amounted to 1,145,628 (14.25 percent), this meant that the number of poor people fell by 33,102 people.

§ During the period March-September 2015, the poor population in urban areas fell by 30,141 people, or by 1.11 percent. In rural areas it also declined by 2,961 people, or by 0.13 percent.

§ The composition of the poor according to the area of ​​residence (urban and rural) has not changed much, where the majority (67.58 percent) of the poor are in rural areas.

§ The poverty line in the province of South Sumatra is IDR 340,958, - the poverty line in urban areas is IDR 378,739, - while the poverty line in rural areas is IDR 319,994. Compared to March 2015, the poverty line experienced increases both in urban and rural areas.

§ In the period March - September 2015, the Poverty Depth Index (P1) and Poverty Severity Index (P2) both showed a decrease. This indicates that the average expenditure of the poor tends to approach the poverty line and the inequality of expenditure of the poor narrows.
