In September 2016 the number of poor people (population with per capita expenditure per month under the Poverty Line) in South Sumatra Province reached 1,096,500 people (13.39 percent). Reduced by 4,690 people compared to March 2016 conditions of 1.101.190 (13.54 percent).The percentage of poor people in urban areas in March 2016 of 12.74 percent decreased to 12.73 percent in September 2016. While the percentage of poor people in rural areas dropped from 13.99 percent in March 2016 to 13.77 percent in September 2016.
  • During the period of March 2016-September 2016 the urban poor increased by 3.35 thousand (from 374.53 thousand in March 2016 to 377,88 thousand in September 2016), while in rural areas it decreased by 8.05 Thousand people (from 726.67 thousand people in March 2016 to 718,62 thousand people in September 2016)
  • The role of food commodities against the Poverty Line is much greater than the role of non-food commodities (housing, clothing, education and health). The contribution of the Food Poverty Line to the Poverty Line in September 2016 was recorded at 76.04 percent, this condition is not much different from the condition in March 2016 that is equal to 76.51 percent
  • The food commodities that have a great influence on urban poverty line are relatively the same as in rural areas, including rice, filter clove cigarettes, chicken eggs, granulated sugar, instant noodles, beef and red pepper. While non-food commodities are housing, gasoline, electricity, education and toiletries.
  • In the period of March-September 2016, Poverty Depth Index (P1) showed a decline, while Poverty Severity Index (P2) showed an increase.
