Abstract

§ The number of poor people (population below the Poverty Line) in South Sumatra Province in March 2016 was 1,101,192 or 13.54 percent. Compared to the poor population in September 2015 which amounted to 1,112,526 people (13.77%), this meant that the number of poor people was reduced by 11,334 people or 0.23 percent.

§ During the period of September 2015 - March 2016, the poor population in urban areas increased by 13,798 people, or by 0.23 percent. However, in rural areas there were a decrease of 25,132 people, or 0.48 percent.

§ The composition of the poor according to the area of ​​residence (urban and rural) has not changed much, with the majority (65.99%) of the poor in rural areas in March 2016.

§ The Poverty Line in March 2016 in the province of South Sumatra amounted to Rp 351,984, - greater than 3.23 percent compared to September 2015. The poverty line in urban areas amounted to Rp 388,060, - while the poverty line in rural areas was Rp. 331,570. Compared to September 2015, the poverty line experienced increases in both urban and rural areas, increasing by 2.46 percent and 3.62 percent.

§ In the period September 2015 - March 2016, the Poverty Depth Index (P1) shows an increase, but the Poverty Severity Index (P2) tends to decrease. This indicates that the average expenditure of the poor tends to move further away from the poverty line but the disparity in expenditure among the poor is decreasing.
