Abstract

In March 2018 the number of poor (people with per capita expenditure per month below the Poverty Line) in South Sumatra Province reached 1,068.27 thousand people (12.80 percent). Reduced by 18.65 thousand people compared with March 2017 conditions of 1,086.92 people (13.10 percent).

The percentage of poor people in urban areas in March 2017 of 12.45 percent decreased to 12.18 percent in March 2018. While the percentage of poor people in rural areas dropped from 13.62 percent in March 2017 to 13.17 percent in March 2018.

The role of food groups against the Poverty Line is much greater than the role of non-food groups (housing, clothing, education and health). The contribution of the Food Poverty Line (FPL) to the Poverty Line (PL) in March 2018 was recorded at 74.92 percent, slightly decreased compared to March 2017 condition which amounted to 75.47 percent.

Food commodities that affect the urban poverty line is relatively the same as in rural areas, including rice, filter clove cigarettes, chicken meat, chicken eggs, instant noodles, sugar and red pepper. While non-food commodities are housing, electricity, gasoline, education and toiletries.
